YOU MAKE ME

I read a lot of Tommy Tenney books. I love what he has to say about worship and chasing after God. As a worship leader, few books I read get me fired up more. In the “more” section of this website you’ll find quotes from some of his books I’ve read and a link to his website. I was reading a lot of Tommy Tenney stuff when I wrote this song. I was also just coming out of a ‘dry place’ in my life and found myself craving more of the presence of God. This all produced lines like: ‘I’m running after you…” (an indirect reference to being a “God Chaser” as Mr. Tenney talks about) “…coming the closest that I can”.

I also wanted to make it clear that I understand that God is all around us. He is everywhere, in everything, and every good and perfect gift is from him. But there is more to Him than just that. There can be a place of privileged relationship with the King of Kings, a deeper personal experience of him that just seeing God at work in everyday life. There can be more of the presence of God then what we all commonly experience if we want it! Its really what we all were created needing. But it often seems elusive. I called it “the light that shines from under the door” in this song. It's curious from a distance. Mysterious. We walk through that door with worship. When we passionately display our love for Him and seek His face we find Him. When we lay down our pride and express our desperate need for Him He comes running like a father runs to a child in need calling for daddy. That love relationship is why we were made, and what we all need the most whether we realize it yet or not.
