TODAY

This song was written towards the end of my time pastoring in Greenwich CT. I wrote it as I was getting my first inklings that I might be finishing up my time there in the near future. I was feeling the first tugs in my heart towards returning to a focus on music and specifically worship. That set my mind in the direction of trusting God for the future though it might seem unstable.

My pastor in Greenwich, Rev. Glenn Harvison, likes happy music. Discontent with the shift in music from the 90’s through to now, he would always say: “where has all the happy music gone?” He told me several times there is an endearing quality to some of that music I would call “old” - and he’s right! “Today” is my ‘happy’ song. I wanted it to be fun, positive, and set the tone for what one might hope to accomplish for the day, as well as give reason to hope and trust in God for the future.

Proverbs 16:9 says: "We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps." Psalms 37:23 says: "The steps of a righteous man are ordered by God." And, of course, Jeremiah 29:11 says: “I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” The ideas of those verses show up in this song. Also woven into this song is a reference to 'Amazing' in the line “Your love for me has never changed” and to the poem ‘footprints’ in the line "You carry me through it all.” These are all the things that were going through my mind as I wrote this song.

Looking back now at this past year in our lives I would have to say this was written prophetically over the lives of my wife, Danielle, and I. I didn’t know when I wrote this song that this journey of faith we were about to enter would be one of the most difficult years of our lives so far. We often come back to the line in this song “I will stay close to you, yesterday is through and the best is yet to be” for encouragement. Its true!
