OPEN SKY
There’s an old saying: “The heavens are brass.” It was used to describe
the times when it feels like your prayers are just bouncing off the ceiling
and falling on the floor unheard. Times when it seems like God must be
a million miles away, or there’s at least an impenetrable wall between
you and Him. Ever felt that way? I sure have. I’ve found the times I felt
like that the most, though, is when I’m being disobedient and holding out
on God on an issue I don’t want to give in to Him on. The Bible says there’s
a point at which God just “gives us over” to our own sin and lets us do
what we want and experience the consequences of it. Separation from Him
is one of those consequences. If you’re used to talking to God all the
time, and sensing him near you’ll notice when it feels like a one way conversation!
Open Sky was a phrase that came to me one day as I got up off my knees.
I had been having a “heavens are brass” experience for a while at that
point and just finished truly making it right and repenting. As I got up,
I suddenly felt 200 percent better! It had been long enough that I forgot
what a clean slate with God felt like! Wow! What an awesome thing to have
no unresolved issues between you and God! I felt totally free again and
a weight I had been carrying around unnecessarily because of my own stubornness
was finally lifted .The sin that had come between me and God had been wiped
away by Jesus. I felt awesome. I thought, hey, this should be a song! Ha-ha.
Being free like that is an incredible feeling. I think this is a really
happy song. Thats why we left in that laugh that got recorded somewhere
along the way... I thought it just set the tone. It's a feel-good song.
We need those!
There are some other themes running through this song similar to captured
again. ‘I give it all, lay it all down I want to see Your face” is an obvious
similarity. But the other thought in this song I wanted to make mention
of is the line “It’s in freedom I, give you my whole life, and live it
just to thank You for this open sky.” We live for God not to EARN forgiveness
or his love. He gives us that freely. Then in turn, we are motivated to
give it all back to him with our lives to show our faith. Faith without
actions is dead. We serve God as a response to His love that gives us freedom.
What an awesome thing to be in open love relationship with the creator
of the universe, and give our lives back to him!
